STUDENT ADVISOR (ONE-YEAR FIXED TERM CONTRACT)

PEROMNES POST LEVEL 8

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for providing support to students especially those at risk of failing within the Faculty in order for such students to succeed and also to monitor progress of students at risk. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Academic advising (including but not limited to) participating in the orientation of new students, advising on curriculum changes/module changes/drops/adds and withdrawal;
  • Supporting students identified as being at risk of not succeeding;
  • Directing students with problems such as financial and psychological to the relevant support services;
  • Tracking students' performance and directing them to the academic assistance available;
  • Managing and maintaining data on student interactions;
  • Maintaining an advisory file on each advisee;
  • Participating in projects from time to time as delegated by management.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Honours in Educational Psychology, Psychology or Social Work;
  • At least three years' experience as a tutor, mentor or advisor at a tertiary institution.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • A good understanding of the faculty curriculum;
  • Advanced Ms Excel skills;
  • Excellent time management skills;
  • Basic understanding of Higher Education Systems;
  • Ability to present workshops and conducting one-on-one interviews;
  • Excellent facilitation skills;
  • Ability to manage and follow through referred cases;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Two years' career counselling experience.

The all-inclusive remuneration package for this contract position will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
