Job Purpose

The University of Birmingham has applied for funding from ERDF and its partners to deliver business support and access to innovation facilities and expertise for ISO-accredited characterisation of devices in terms of safety and usability.It will remove a regulatory blockage to the development of the local life science economy by providing a set of facilities that we have identified to be absent in the region.

The project will accelerate the translation of novel innovations in the laboratory through to the clinic and commercial exploitation. In doing so, it will aid in the development of existing markets and stimulate new ones for Life Sciences' SME's, enabling them to bring products to market quickly, at less cost with reduced risk.

The post will be based in the Institute of Translational Medicine at University Hospital Birmingham although the post holder will be expected to work on locations from time to time.The role will also involve collaboration with GBS LEP area SMEs. Therefore, the ability to interact with external commercial organisations is a prerequisite for this position.

 

Person Specification

  • To hold a PhD or EngD (or equivalent qualifications) pertinent to the post, with an ability to read across disciplines.
  • Strong data handling and analysis skills
  • Possesses sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and or research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes
  • Relevant and up to date knowledge in one of the areas described above (Biological development, sensor characterisation, Biomaterials Science, or Manufacturing pertinent to Healthcare Technologies).
  • Skilled in the use of techniques pertinent to one of the areas described above.
  • Ability to summarise complex issues/concepts and present them appropriately for a range of audiences.
  • Ability to plan, manage and prioritise own workload, respond to changing priorities and deliver innovative solutions to deadlines maintaining a consistently high standard of service and meeting client needs.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-functional team across partner organisations.
  • Good client relationship management and interpersonal skills and an ability to work closely with other people at all levels of seniority, both within and outside the University.
  • Good communication skills: oral, written and presentational.
  • Understanding of the higher education research environment, its research functions and markets.
  • Understanding of academic research and knowledge transfer practices, funding streams and motivations.
  • An ability to communicate with individuals from a range of different backgrounds and from both academia, clinical practise and industry.
  • To hold a relevant first degree or masters to the post or related disciplines or equivalent experience
