Job Purpose

This role will be located within the School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham, Edgbaston campus, Birmingham. The University of Birmingham is the only institution to offer a Practitioner Doctorate in Forensic Clinical Psychology (ForenClinPsyD) accredited by the British Psychological Society. It is offered alongside other professional doctorate courses which include the Clinical Psychology Doctorate (ClinPsyD), a Continuing Professional Development Doctorate in Forensic Psychology (CPDForenPsyD) and Forensic Psychology Practice Doctorate (ForenPsyD).

 

Job Summary

The School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham is recruiting to the post of Senior Lecturer/Reader in Forensic or Clinical Psychology within the Centre for Applied Psychology. The post holder will be joining a new and expanding group of 30 applied psychologists and researchers of applied psychology. They will be the Director of our flagship Practitioner Doctorate in Forensic Clinical Psychology - the only Doctorate in the UK which leads to eligibility to register with the Health and Care Professions Council as both a clinical and forensic psychologist. This is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving Centre, lead a progressive course team, and play a strategic role in how the new Centre and its professional courses evolve. There are also opportunities for collaboration with the newly established Institute for Mental Health which has a particular focus on youth mental health.

 

Main Duties

Specific roles and tasks that the post encompass include: teaching on our professional forensic/forensic-clinical/clinical doctorate and masters courses, PG and UG research supervision, research tutoring, leading/coordinating teaching modules, and appraisal of trainees on professional courses. In addition, the Director will lead the ForenClinPsyD, taking responsibility for the effective running of the course and providing strategic vision in terms of teaching and supervision of trainees, and incorporating teaching innovations where appropriate. The post holder may also hold a senior administrative role supporting the ClinPsyD as part of their fractional appointment (e.g., Academic Director)

 

Person Specification

  • The Director of the Forensic Clinical Psychology Doctorate will have the experience and ambition to lead our highly successful professional doctorate.
  • As an HCPC-registered practitioner psychologist (forensic or clinical), the candidate will be an expert in forensic or clinical psychology, with a strong understanding of professional psychological practice, and an extensive network of professional contacts.
  • As well as HCPC registration, the appointee will have a doctoral level qualification in forensic or clinical psychology (e.g., PhD or ClinPsyD or ForenPsyD).
  • They will have a clear vision for the future development of our professional courses, ensuring we continue to produce graduates of the highest calibre, ready to work in challenging practice environments.
  • They will be inspiring teachers who are able to communicate with our trainees and students, placement providers and other practitioners.
  • Experience of teaching or supervising postgraduate level students/trainees would therefore be required.
