Job description

The Department of History is looking to appoint a Research Associate who will be, working on the AHRC-funded Leadership Project ‘British Military Bases in Germany: Living with the Cold War and its Legacies, 1945-2000'. The project examines British military communities living in Germany during the Cold War and its immediate aftermath, making extensive use of in-depth oral history interviews with former residents. The project sits at the intersection between Cold War history and British social history, demonstrating that these bases were not just strategic outposts, but vibrant social communities.

The Research Associate will work closely with the PI to organise and deposit oral history interviews, conduct archival research, co-organize a workshop on 'Cold War Voices' and work with external partners on impact and engagement activities on a local and national level. The Research Associate will also continue to develop their own publication profile in modern history and will receive appropriate mentoring and training throughout. The person appointed as Research Associate to the project will need to have secured a PhD degree in a related area of modern history, even if the formal award of the degree has not yet been made.
