Job Purpose

To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within an established research programme. The programme is to use advanced fluorescence microscopy methods, especially super-resolution microscopy, to elucidate the biophysical mechanisms regulating T cell activation. In particular, we will investigate the role of protein and lipid spatio-temporal organisation in regulating signalling at the CD4 T cell immunological synapse and during T cell migration. Main Duties

  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Analyse and interpret data
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
  • Undertake management/administration arising from research
  • Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration

 

Person Specification

  • First degree in Immunology, Cell Biology or related biological sciences, or Physics with specialisms in biophysics PhD inImmunology, Cell Biology or related biological sciences, or Physics with specialisms in biophysics or fluorescence microscopy development
  • Experience working with T cells, T cell culture, cell transfections, immunostaining
  • Fluorescence microscopy experience including, but not limited to super-resolution microscopy, TIRF and confocal microscopy
  • Experience of image analysis methodology desirable
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team operating at the interface between the physical and life sciences
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
  • Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
