The School of Mathematics and Physics

The discipline of Physics is located in the School of Mathematics and Physics in the Faculty of Science. The discipline is internationally recognised for its research excellence in quantum science and hosts a number of first class research centres.

The School of Mathematics and Physics leads the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Engineered Quantum Systems and hosts nodes of the ARC CoE for Future Low-Energy Electronics Technologies and ARC CoE for Quantum Computing and Communication Technology.

Details of the research interests of academic staff may be accessed on the school's web site at http://www.smp.uq.edu.au/ .

The role

The successful appointee will actively contribute to an internationally recognised research program in the theoretical area of ultracold quantum gases with an emphasis on the emerging field of quantum thermodynamics. The appointee will develop theoretical and computational many-body methods for characterising and simulating the nonequilibrium dynamics of ultracold quantum gases in a variety of thermodynamic scenarios. Applications of these methods will be made to fundamental and applied problems, including modelling and development of proposals for specific ultracold atom experiments in collaboration with international partners.

The person

Applicants should possess or be in the process of completing a PhD in theoretical a PhD in theoretical physics in the area ultracold atoms or condensed matter physics with expertise in computational many-body dynamics. They need to have a strong background and demonstrated capacity to carry out research in AMO, Condensed Matter and/or Computational Physics, with high level analytical and computational skills. Expertise in numerical methods for quantum many-body dynamics, such t-DMRG, Matrix Product States and/or finite temperature c-field techniques is required. Applicants should also have a track-record of high-quality publications in leading international journals, high-level verbal and written communication skills, and the capacity to work and interact well with colleagues, staff, and students.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for upto 2 years at Academic level A. The remuneration package will be in the range of $83,295 p.a. - $89,285 p.a. plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17%.
