Project summary

Developing smart orthopaedic implants with antimicrobial and osseointegrative surfaces

We are seeking a talented, highly motivated individual for a postdoctoral Research Associate position within Bristol Dental School at the University of Bristol. You will join an exciting programme of work on the development of smart orthopaedic implants with cell-instructive surfaces, supervised by Prof Bo Su and Dr Angela Nobbs within the Biomaterials Engineering and Oral Microbiology groups respectively, in collaboration with Prof Matt Dalby (University of Glasgow).

Specifically, this project will investigate a unique surface nanoengineering approach to develop smart orthopaedic Ti implants that can prevent bacterial infection while promoting osseointegration. You will generate different nanopatterns on 3D printed Ti implant surfaces and conduct microbiological testing to establish the relationship between nanotopography and antimicrobial and anti-biofouling performance. Surface functionalisation will be carried out and its synergistic effects investigated. You will also be responsible for supplying samples to our project collaborators at the University of Glasgow for stem cell studies.

Requirements

You should have a PhD degree in materials, chemistry or engineering. Knowledge and experience of microbiology will be advantageous but not essential. Appropriate training on microbiological testing will be provided.

Further information

This post is funded by the MRC and is supported for 3 years. Interested applicants are invited to contact Prof Bo Su ( b.su@bristol.ac.uk ) for further information or discussion.

Closing date for applications is 23:59 on 31 March 2019. The selection process will be held as soon as possible after the closing date.

We appreciate and value difference, seeking to attract, develop and retain a diverse mix of talented people that will contribute to the overall success of Bristol and help maintain our position as one of the world's leading universities.
