Job Role

The Postgraduate Researcher Development Officer will be leading and managing the University Personal and Professional Development Programme for postgraduate research students.

In doing so you will be:
  • Working with colleagues across professional support services and faculty staff, as well as managing the engagement with a whole host of training providers:
  • Creative, self-motivated and have excellent interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Effective in both training design and delivery


You will lead on the central support of PGR development, evaluating its effectiveness, making judgement on strengths, weaknesses and opportunities, and responding to the emergent needs of the PGR Community as indicated by focus groups, student feedback and the national PRES survey. This requires you to interpret and analyse the available data, work with the colleagues in the Careers Service and contacts in Faculties and Schools to determine priorities, using your experience to design and deliver appropriate activities to PGRs in the most accessible way.

The BDC also delivers the University's flagship event for PGR community - Research without Borders festival of postgraduate research, a series of other large-scale events such as the PGR Inauguration, and operating and managing the service delivery in the new PGR Hub in the heart of the campus. You will work closely with the BDC Communication and Engagement team to contribute and support these strategic initiatives.

Person Specification
  • You will be an expert communicator with excellent writing and presentation skills who will establish and maintain effective working relationships with academics and other professional services staff to deliver on the role objectives.
  • You will be highly organised, with experience of managing your own workload and that of others.
  • You will be comfortable with a varying set of demands and emerging requirements, spanning from relationship development with providers, delivery of activities to PGRs, or other elements of the role.
  • As a PGR development expert within the team, you will also know how to support and develop the knowledge and capabilities of others and will actively contribute to the development and success of the Doctoral College and the community it serves.


The post is full-time offered on an open-ended contract. The post is available from the 1st May 2019.
