Job Purpose

This position is for a post-doctoral Research Fellow to work on a survey-based research strand within a multidisciplinary research team, on a large-scale international project entitled: Science and Religion: Exploring the Spectrum of Global Perspectives (funded by the Templeton Religion Trust). The post holder will work closely with the Principal Investigator and Co-investigators (in the UK and internationally) to undertake the development of online survey-based data collection and analysis of survey data from across a range of countries in multiple languages. This role will involve working closely with a collaborative team of international qualitative researchers based in 6 countries, examining social and cultural perspectives of evolutionary science and religion. It will also involve working with colleagues internationally to design, test and pilot surveys, and to implement qualitative fieldwork pre-screening surveys (which may include face-to-face survey-based data collection or qualitative testing of survey measures).

The post holder will have key responsibilities with respect to developing and undertaking relevant strands of research, data analysis and producing related project outputs. The post-holder will also be expected to develop and contribute to analysis of cross-cultural qualitative research findings and liaise with qualitative researchers in each participating country to disseminate research findings in a variety of formats for academic and non-academic audiences both in the UK and Internationally.

The post holder will be expected to engage in all aspects of project dissemination, team meetings and international networking activities, including contributing the project-related websites, workshops and relevant conferences. This role will involve predominantly working in the UK, but it may involve some international travel as and when necessary.

Person Specification
  • PhD in Social Study of Science or Religion and/or the public perceptions of either science or religion and/or a similar relevant field of study which includes survey-based research MRes or masters in relevant social research methods or similar relevant field of study and/or equivalent
  • A relevant undergraduate degree, at a minimum of a 2:1 classification or equivalent is required.
  • An interest in, and desirably experience of, undertaking research relating to the relationship between science, religion and non-religion in society.
  • Highly proficient in use of statistical analysis software (e.g. SPSS) and relevant data collection software (e.g. Qualtrics)
  • Highly proficient in quantitative survey-based research data collection and analysis
  • Desirably some experience of qualitative field/piloting research (e.g. semi-structured interviews, focus groups).
  • An interest in, and desirably experience of, of international research collaboration.
  • An interest in, and desirably experience of, working as part of a multi-disciplinary research project or team
  • An interest in, and desirably experience of, public engagement activities or research communication
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Ability to work well as part of a team
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
  • Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
  • A good understanding of the methodological implications arising from multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural research
  • Demonstrable cultural sensitivity in research and dissemination
  • Ability to travel internationally as necessary
