School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering

The successful applicant will work in UQ's Centre for Hypersonics, housed in the School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering, which operates two world leading laboratories for hypersonic experimentation. The core of these activities lies in the unique set of impulse facilities (shock and expansion tunnels) which are able to reproduce the flow conditions representative of hypersonic flight, and which are the primary distinguishing feature of our group. The shock tubes are high maintenance items, involving erosive conditions with gas temperatures much hotter than the surface of the sun, and pressures up to the order of 1000's of atmospheres. We are primarily an experimentally driven group, and rely on the continued regular and safe operation of these facilities to meet our grant commitments and to provide the technical material which drives our research and educational programs. Our activities include research on many aspects of hypersonic flows, from scramjet powered access to space systems to the issues of superorbital atmospheric entry and inter-planetary exploration, and the ongoing development of more advanced ground testing facilities.

With an excellent reputation for quality graduate training and research performance, the School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering delivers a comprehensive range of programs in aerospace, materials, mechanical, mechatronic and mining engineering.

Boasting strong student enrolments in professionally accredited programs, combined with world-class researchers and facilities, we are focused on strengthening our position in the engineering community. We will develop global solutions to contemporary issues and mentor the leaders of tomorrow by attracting the brightest minds and fostering a truly innovative and collaborative work environment.

The School recognises and values equity and diversity, and encourages applications from any individual who meets the requirements of this position, regardless of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, religion, disability, age or other protected attributes. The School strives to provide an inclusive working environment, and along with the University, is committed to supporting staff with family and caring responsibilities by providing policies, programs and initiatives to help balance work and family responsibilities.
