Job description

One Post-doctoral researcher opportunity with a FAPESP (São Paulo Research Foundation) scholarship is available under the aegis of the Thematic Project "Impact of inspiratory muscle training and aging on metabolic mapping and autonomic modulation at rest and in cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic responses to physical exercise in healthy men", coordinated by Professor Dr. Aparecida Maria Catai. Deadline for application is April 18, 2019.

The Post-doctoral researcher will carry out activities at the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Physiotherapy, at UFSCar's Department of Physiotherapy under the supervision of Professor Dr. Aparecida Maria Catai.

The scholarship will last 24 months, renewable for up to 24 months, depending on the performance of the scholarship holder, who will be evaluated annually in accordance with FAPESP regulations. The selected candidate will receive a FAPESP Post-doctoral Scholarship of R$ 7,373.10 per month. The Technical Reserve is also expected to be equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the scholarship, which is intended to cover unforeseen expenses directly related to the research activity. If the Post-doctoral scholarship holder resides at a different address and needs to move to the city where the research institution is located, he/she may be entitled to relocation assistance.

Th candidate

Candidates must have completed their PhD less than 7 (seven) years ago. The other requisites needed for the application required by FAPESP may be consulted at http://www.fapesp.br/en/postdoc .

Candidate's obligations
  • The candidate must devote exclusively to the research project (except by authorization of FAPESP, under the conditions set forth in the Post-doctoral Decree nº 05/2012);
  • The candidate must not receive a scholarship from another entity, salary or remuneration derived from exercising activities of any nature (except by authorization of FAPESP, under the conditions set forth in Post-doctoral Decree nº 05/2012);
  • The candidate must submit scientific reports and application reports of technical reserve resources within the deadlines set forth in the Agreement, accompanied by the requested documentation.

Important: Failure to comply with these regulations and other obligations described at http://www.fapesp.br/en/postdoc will result in cancellation of the scholarship and repayment of payments already made by FAPESP, at restated amounts.

Specific activities

As part of his/her activities, the Post-doctoral researcher should evaluate the effect of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on cardiorespiratory and metabolic responses (muscle oxygenation by spectroscopy) during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and incremental inspiratory muscle endurance (IMRi) testing, and metabolic changes at rest (metabolome study) in recreational cyclists. The candidate should also have knowledge and mastery of:
  • Carrying out the following evaluations: CPET; IMRi; assessment of cardiovascular autonomic modulation (by heart rate and blood pressure variability - HRV and BPV, respectively); assessment of body composition (using dual-emission x-ray absorptiometry - DXA); pulmonary function test; and program inspiratory muscle training;
  • Evaluate cardiovascular responses by peripheral pulse monitoring, metabolic responses by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and metabolic and ventilatory variable responses using expired gas measurement systems (metabolic carts / ergospirometers).
