Professor in Child and Family Welfare

Location: Bristol, UK

The School for Policy Studies is seeking to appoint a Professor to expand and complement our current excellent teaching, research and impact activities in the broad area of Child and Family Welfare. The appointee will join a dynamic, ambitious and collegial School that pushes forward intellectual debates and real-world solutions to a range of policy and social dilemmas within an interdisciplinary environment.

The School has an exceptional reputation for teaching, research and public engagement. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) 80% of research in Social Work and Social Policy was rated world-leading or internationally excellent. In the QS World Rankings we are consistently ranked in the top 30 worldwide and top ten in the UK. Our undergraduate programmes are top rated in national league tables and we strive to deliver an excellent and innovative student experience.

The appointee will further enhance the work of the Centre for Children and Families. Areas of research focus may include social work; international and comparative perspectives on child and family welfare; services for children, parents and families including those with complex needs; child development and early years services; and education. We also encourage applications from those able to work across the School and make links with other Research Centres in relation, for example, to disabilities, health, migration, and poverty. It is expected that teaching contributions will include core and optional units on one or more of our programmes in Childhood Studies (UG), Social Work (MSc), and Advanced Social Work (MSc) and across other programmes as appropriate. The appointee will be expected to develop and engage with appropriate innovation and curriculum development.

You should have expertise and a track record in the field of Children and Families; ability to take on management roles within the School; and a record of national and international leadership in research and scholarship and evidence of contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the field. You should also have an outstanding record of research and scholarship reflected in publications and external research funding profile; evidence of ability to promote excellence in teaching and learning; and significant experience of, and willingness to contribute to, the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students, including lecturing, seminars, and supervision of research students. A PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline is also essential.

The post is open ended and available from 2 September 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The post is full time, however the School is open to requests for working part time/job share.
