Job Purpose

This post will create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within the project NEOHIRE funded by EU Horizon 2020 (Grant Agreement 720838). The successful applicant will work with the NEOHIRE consortium on the joint research project to produce, characterise and exploit NdFeB powder for bonded magnet production using the high temperature hydrogen reaction known as HDDR (Hydrogenation Disproportionation Desorption and Recombination). The ultimate aim is to produce bonded magnets suitable for use in bespoke wind turbine generator systems from both primary gas atomised powder and recycled wind turbine magnets (secondary).

The postholder will work within specified research grants and projects and contribute to writing bids; analyse and interpret research findings and results; contribute to generating funding and contribute to licensing or spin out deals with demonstrated commercial success and public understanding of the discipline.

Person Specification
  • First degree in relevant subject Hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD in relevant subject (or be in possession of equivalent research experience)
  • Demonstrably strong interpersonal skills to allow good working relationship with NEOHIRE partner institutions
  • Demonstrable ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Demonstrable ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/ administration processes
  • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
  • Demonstrable ability to co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort

Strong experimental background and understanding in the following areas:
  • Production techniques of NdFeB type magnets;
  • Working with hydrogen at room and elevated temperatures;
  • Hydrogen processing of NdFeB magnets;
  • Hydrogen decrepitation of end-of-life sintered magnets as an extraction tool;
  • Purification of hydrogen decrepitated powders using mechanical methods;
  • Measurement of physical and magnetic properties of magnetic materials;
  • Scanning electron microscopy of hydrogen-containing materials;
