Job Purpose

The Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences seeks to appoint a senior academic cardiologist. We are looking for a successful clinical or translational researcher who wants to lead a research programme in ICVS and in Sandwell and West Birmingham (SWBH) NHS Trust. The Institute is one of eight research institutes that form the core of the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham. ICVS is recognised around the world for its research in atrial fibrillation and thrombo-inflammation. The appointee will hold an honorary consultant contract with SWBH NHS Trust where the clinical role will be based. The department of cardiology at SWBH NHS Trust has particular research strengths in atrial fibrillation and an active clinical trials programme. SWBH NHS Trust plans a new clinical research facility within the trust and aims to become an exemplar for integrated care.

This post offers an excellent opportunity for an outstanding individual to lead an active translational and clinical research programme and to further develop a national and international research portfolio in cardiovascular research in an environment conducive to clinical and translational research. The successful candidate will have full access to our research infrastructure related to clinical trials, analysis of big data, and underpinning discovery science, including the Birmingham Institute of Translational Medicine, the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit, the emerging capacity for handling and analysing big data in the substantive Midlands HDRUK site, and discovery science laboratories in the Institute.

The Institute has a reputation for internationally competitive research, with world-wide recognition for its work in thrombo-inflammation and atrial fibrillation. Laboratory-based research centres on thrombosis, inflammation and vascular biology, and mechanisms underlying cardiac arrhythmias. Clinical research at SWBH focuses on the clinical epidemiology of cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular pathophysiology, as well as an active clinical trials programme. There are existing strengths in community-based cardiovascular research.

An academic interest in improving diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in our established areas of interest would be desirable. This is in keeping with our developing interests in translational medicine, focussing on molecular mechanisms of thrombotic and heart diseases. Thus, a strong clinical research background, complemented by an interest in molecular cardiovascular pathophysiology wouldbe an advantage. Experience in set-up, organisation and management of investigator-sponsored controlled trials would also be an advantage.

The appointee will be expected to have an ongoing research programme and track record in cardiovascular themes linked to the above, and have the capability to form local, national and international research collaborations.

In addition to making a major contribution to an area of research, the successful applicant will contribute to the wider delivery of the strategic plans of the Institute, College and SWBH NHS Trust. They will also play an active and collegiate role within the Institute, the wider University, SWBH NHS Trust and the external environment, including internationally.

Expertise in education will be expected. The appointee will be able to show evidence of leadership in teaching, with experience of the delivery and management of training of undergraduates, junior doctors and clinical fellows. Regular involvement in clinical teaching of students will be expected.
