Job Details

Applications are invited for a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate in the Bristol Interaction Group (BIG Lab) within the Department of Computer Science at the University of Bristol. The role is part of the EPSRC project Crossmodal Interactive Tools for Inclusive Learning investigating novel multisensory learning and teaching technologies that supports inclusive education for visually-impaired and sighted children in mainstream schools.

We are using an interactive user-centered approach combining co-design activities with empirical research into multisensory and crossmodal interaction to find out how different senses can be effectively integrated with visual capabilities. We are particularly interested in combining audio, tactile and olfactory feedback in interactive technology and we are engaged with local schools to design and research multisensory tools for teaching and learning purposes, focusing on accommodating curriculum requirements and social processes surrounding collaborative learning.

We are looking for a candidate with:
  • Solid skills in software and hardware development
  • Expertise in physical and digital prototyping, sensors, making, tinkering, etc.
  • Expertise in HCI, participatory design
  • Interest in multisensory interaction and accessibility

The successful candidate must hold a PhD in Computer Science or related disciplines, with strong programming and development skills and a strong track record in relevant HCI research as evidenced by publications in appropriate venues. They will have an appreciation for user-centered design approaches and work well independently as well as part of a team. Experience in multisensory and collaborative systems development will be valued.

You will work with the PI and with partner schools to conduct research that ranges from software and hardware development to experimental user studies and evaluation.

The position is based within BIG Lab ( http://big.cs.bris.ac.uk/ ) at the University of Bristol and involves close collaboration with the principal investigator of the project, Dr Oussama Metatla, as well as Research Associates and PhD students in the lab who are looking at designing multisensory user interfaces. The group consists of 9 permanent staff members from computer science/hardware electronics and two visiting fellows who bring expertise in sociology and ethnography. This diverse mix of researchers drives the research interests of this group, which is concerned with drawing together traditionally disparate fields of electronic hardware with human interaction in public settings. The group's existing facilities include a 100m2 dedicated prototyping laboratory next to our research offices populated with supporting materials and equipment.

It is anticipated that interviews will take place around the end of May 2019

For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Oussama Metatla o.metatla@cs.bris.ac.uk

We appreciate and value difference, seeking to attract, develop and retain a diverse mix of talented people that will contribute to the overall success of Bristol and help maintain our position as one of the world's leading universities.
