Queensland Brain Institute

The Queensland Brain Institute works to understand the development, organisation and function of the brain. We aim to understand the neural circuits in the brain, how their function results in behavioural outcomes, and how dysfunction of these circuits leads to disorders such as dementia, Parkinson's disease and schizophrenia. We aim to (1) Develop novel therapeutic approaches to treat disorders of neural function and (2) Use our understanding of brain function to improve learning in classrooms and in the workplace.

Established in 2003, QBI ( www.qbi.uq.edu.au ) is housed on the St Lucia campus of UQ. It is home to more than 450 staff and students, including 41 group leaders.

Over the past decade QBI has become known as one of the world's leading neuroscience research institutes. It played a key role in contributing to UQ attaining the highest possible score of 5 for neuroscience, in the 2010, 2012, and 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessments, one of only two universities in Australia to achieve this.

The role

A newly created opportunity, you will complete the development of a novel computer-based Cognitive Test Battery. In addition, you will provide further assistance with maintenance/bug fixes of the Cognitive Test Battery which has been developed in the Cognitive Neurology lab at the Queensland Brain Institute.

This will be achieved through close working relationships with researchers, professional IT staff and research students and this position is physically based at the Queensland Brain Institute, St Lucia Campus. The test battery is already largely constructed but some aspects need additional programming to achieve the final working program.

The person

To be successful in this appointment, you will be able to demonstrate:
  • Hon/Masters/PhD quals in Computer Sciences/software engineering or similar (either recently completed or currently completing).
  • Good knowledge of coding with specific experience in Python, PsycoPy, MySql and Panda.
  • Programming skills with solid understanding of software engineering techniques, methodologies and practices.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well both independently and in a team environment are necessary.

In addition, the following are desirable but not essential:
  • Experience working with MatLab
  • Computer game construction
  • Biostatistics (particularly those relevant to signal detection theory such as d' )

You must have valid Australian work rights to apply for this role. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Salary and Benefits

This is a casual appointment, initially required for 6 months however with the possibility of extension. This appointment with be at either Hew Level 4 or 5, with the final level of appointment commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience. The hourly remunerate will be from $41.20 to $49.90, plus 9.5% employer superannuation contributions.
