Job Purpose

Contribute to the whole range of research, teaching and administration.

Research experience should demonstrate international collaboration in the field of food safety and applied food research. The research should have has measurable outcomes, publication in respected journals and reflect at least a national reputation and incipient international reputation.

The post holder will be responsible for monitoring relevant funding calls and leading on collaborations to deliver the submission requirement. The post holder is expected to develop collaborations with the food industry and with competent authorities which result in mutually beneficial projects, using the range of expertise in the Food Safety Group.

Teaching responsibilities will include
(a) the management, development (including programme/module review) and delivery of teaching and assessment; and
(b) enhancement of the student experience or employability.

Specifically the candidate will be expected to play a major role in the following programmes: MSc/PGDip/PGCert in Food Safety, Hygiene and Management, The Certificate in Higher Education in Food Safety and Food Legislation and the module on Food Safety within the MSc in Environmental Health.

The MSc in Food Safety, Hygiene and Management was developed to provide post-qualification training for food, enforcement and health professionals. The first students were admitted in October 1997. The students attending the course come from a variety of backgrounds and it is popular with officials working in Control Authorities in the UK and overseas. The post holder will be expected to take module responsibility for the research element of the programme as well as for subject specific modules. This includes the responsibility for teaching, assessment and for module development and review. The post holder will also be required to act as personal tutor for students.

The Certificate in Higher Education in Food Safety and Food Legislation provides an assessed course to cover the syllabus of the Higher Certificate in Food Control offered by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. This qualification must be taken by all food safety officers in Local Authority employment who wish to deliver food controls. The course has been accredited by Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and is part time. It runs as a combination of block release and distance learning. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the modules through subject specific lectures and assessments, including the development of applied assessments based on real life case studies.

The MSc in Environmental Health is an EHRB accredited course run by the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. The School of Chemical Engineering is responsible for the food safety module on this course and the successful candidate would also be expected to participate in the teaching of this module in the same manner as for the Certificate in Higher Education in Food Safety and Food Legislation.

The role will also involve developing and advising others, including: (a) providing expert advice to staff and students, (b) supervising and examining PhD students, and (c) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods. In particular the post holder is expected to assist the teaching focused staff develop basic research skills and projects.

Managerial/leadership activities
The post holder will be expected to contribute to some managerial/leadership activities (e.g. working groups) within the University according to his/her expertise and interests. This should include developing innovative ideas for food safety team consultancy work with food industry partners through knowledge transfer. It may also include enterprise, business engagement, competent authority engagement, widening participation or similar activities at Department/School level or further within the University.

Person Specification
  • A PhD in a food related subject, preferably in an applied area of food safety such as processing or microbiology.
  • A recognised teaching qualification is desirable
  • Extensive research/teaching experience and scholarship within subject specialism, with an emphasis on international collaboration and teaching of international students
  • Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning/ research including the application of research outcomes to practical food production and inspection with the expectation of improving food safety.
  • Skills in managing, motivating and mentoring others successfully at all levels
  • Good team player with demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, including ability to communicate complex material to colleagues and students with differing backgrounds and expertise.
  • Good organisational and time management skills, including the ability to lead on and organise collaborative ventures
  • Excellent IT skills


Research
  • Experience and achievement reflected in a growing reputation
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in planning, undertaking and project managing research to deliver high quality results, including international collaborative research
  • Extensive experience of applying and/or developing and devising successful models, techniques (including emerging and novel techniques) and methods in applied food safety
  • Experience and demonstrated achievement in knowledge transfer, business engagement and interaction with competent authorities.


Teaching
  • Demonstrated ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes. At the minimum, extensive experience of module leadership, including evidence of successful reviews and new module development.
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching, in particular, experience of teaching mature students and part time candidates working in the food industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in collaborative teaching
  • Ability to explain and apply current research to food inspection and safety by evaluating food risks uncovered by the research and presenting these in the context of food processing, including any novel or emerging techniques.
  • Understanding of food control systems and the interaction of the industry and enforcement authorities in the UK, EU and globally in the control of food hazards and food borne illness which should be used as a context for lectures.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly to colleagues and students from outside own discipline.
  • Flexibility in the teaching areas to be covered, including a willingness to apply information to the delivery of food controls.
  • Experience and success in knowledge transfer, research led teaching or similar activity that enhances the student experience or employability


Management Administration
